Ezekiel "Coop" Cooper is lonely. He's no longer with the NYPD due to cancer that's in remission. His daughter Bette is in New Jersey, and he doesn't talk with her about anything personal, but he loves her. He's looking forward to seeing her at the family bungalow, but when he gets there, he finds her dead, curled up in a way that suggests a ritual murder. He investigates the death, eventually joining forces with a mystery writer who believes a serial killer has murdered Bette. By the time they put all the pieces together, they realize that the killer is extremely dangerous, and could be headed to kill more people they know. This book puts a new shine on a classic thriller plot.

Former New York cop "Coop" Cooper is dying of cancer. After his daughter is murdered in his own hideaway, his harpy of an ex-wife tries to backseat drive his ex-officio investigation. His best shot for finding the culprit, a devilishly canny serial killer, is by joining forces with an obnoxious, opportunistic writer who has unearthed intriguing leads. How these various plot elements come together puts a fresh spin on standard whodunit fare. The theatrical and expressive Scott Brick reads with slow, measured cadences that provide excruciating suspense--marred only by arbitrary pauses, which seem the result of indifferent editing. His characterizations are strong even where the author's are weak, and his handling of females is among the best I've heard from a male narrator. Y.R. (c) AudioFile 2002, Portland, Maine
